Wales great run in this year’s Euro 2016 is over after they were defeated 2-0 in the semi-final clash by Portugal in Lyon.
After an evenly fought contest in the first half Portugal struck twice in the opening eight minutes of the second half to book their place in Sunday’s Final who they will play either France or Germany.
Ronaldo open the scoring in the 50 minute to equal Michel Platini’s all-time records with nine goals in a European championship. Nani struck three minutes later to double Portugal’s advantage.
Wakes made a couple of changes as James Collins and Andy King replaced Ben Davies and Aaron Ramsey as they both were suspended for this clash after they both received their second yellow cards of this tournament while Bruno Alves replaced the injured Pepe.
Portugal started the match well as they pressed for an early goal and they were unfortunate not to get a penalty after James Collins tangled with Cristiano Ronaldo in the box.
Wales had a chance of their own and it was presented to Gareth Bale but he blazed the ball over.
Wales did force Rui Patricio into a save and it was Bale again. He skipped past the challenge of Danilo Pereira but his shot was fired straight into the hands of the Portuguese goalkeeper.
Five minutes into the second half Portugal broke the deadlock as Ronaldo powered a header past Wayne Hennessey from seven yards out. This was Ronaldo’s third goal of the tournament and his ninth in European Championship history, drawing him level with Michel Platini.
Wales hardly had a chance to breathe from that set back and they were soon two nil down as Nani doubled the lead. Ronaldo dragged his shot where Nani was there to divert the loose ball in.
Wales made a couple of changes to trouble Portugal’s defence but they struggled to create an opening despite Bale attempting a very good shot which moved in the air but Patricio was alert to it.
Hennessey did well to save Danilo shot while Ronaldo went past the keeper but from a tight angle he fired wide.
Portugal were able to hold out to record their first victory inside ninety minutes.
